Your Unconscious Mind is Making You Fat

There I am.

  • Sitting on the couch watching NHL playoff hockey at the end of a long day.
  • The wife offers me some of her potato chips.
  • I decline

I’m a personal trainer dammit, and personal trainers don’t eat potato chips.

Fast forward 20 minutes…..

I am now sprawled out on the couch…..totally immersed in the game…..screaming at the referees for blowing another call….and absent mindedly reaching over and grabbing a handful of potato chips out of the bag…and then another…and then another

your unconscious mind is making you fat

WTF!!! What just happened?

I don’t eat potato chips….seriously. So what happened? Where did my will power go?

I’ll tell you what happened.

  • When my wife first offered the chips, my conscious mind did a quick pro/con calculation and decided to take a pass on the salty/greasy delight.
  • Soon after, my conscious mind became fixated on the hockey game.
  • Soon after that, my unconscious mind snuck behind the back of my conscious mind, and by using a mixture of sensory inputs, old memories, emotions, brain chemicals and hormones, managed to hijack my body and convince it that eating those chips was suddenly a great idea.

Damn you unconscious mind!!!.

  • This is a big reason why diets fail.
  • Your bad habits live in your unconscious mind.
  • Your bad habits have built up powerful connections within your mind and body.

And if you let your unconscious mind run the show, you WILL return time and again to your old habits…your over-eating, under-exercising, making you fat kind of bad habits…

  1. I have been enjoying your blog for over the last 6 months and had only wished I discovered it sooner! Thank you so much for all your valuable research and for your invaluable time spent sharing it with the rest of us…
    This post is so timely because I am having the same problem with old habitual behaviors sneaking up and sabotaging! It seems I have to be in control every second, constantly mindful and making those ‘conscious pro/con calculations’ and decisions, it’s exhausting sometimes. I just keep waiting for the day the sneaky bastard dies, but it always seems to be lying in wait for that opportune weak moment to catch me unawares. So at least one of your readers will be awaiting Saturday’s post 🙂
    I’ve found that meditation and mindfulness is the key to my success (despite the setbacks from the subconscious from time to time, I know I am succeeding -shrinking waistline, etc.) I’ve discovered that mindfulness is an art and is incredibly empowering and to be able to find my center at any moment on any given day keeps me in control of my power of choice. But it is a skill and like any skill I imagine it will take a lifetime to master…so, here’s to hoping it gets a little easier with time.

    I am a big fan of mindfulness training – not a simple thing, but most definitely worth it.

    Have you heard of Dr. Les Fehmi?

    I just finished reading his book – The Open-Focus Brain – There is a CD with the book that has 2 very interesting exercises. Everyone who has tried the General Open-Focus Training exercise has had a very weird, very powerful experience.

  3. I hadn’t heard of him but just googled and wow, right up my alley, thanks for the tip!
    If only more people could realize the power we have in our minds…it is a gift we all have access to and so many people suffer so much needless nonsense simply from not giving themselves some loving mind-time to find some clarity and direction. It’s too bad that it’s ‘out there’ sounding to most because life is so much more fulfilling when we become fully aware of our potential and empower ourselves to pursue. I’ll let you know what I think of Fehmi, sounds enriching!

  4. Also along these lines is research done by Jeffrey Schwartz, who studied people with OCD. He also had an interest in Buddhism, and he found that by applying mindfulness techniques and getting people to realize that OCD was just a “brain glitch,” and ignore it and do something else, they physically changed their brain — rewired it, so to speak.

    There’s a lot of research on the subconscious mind (reptile brain?), and brain plasticity, and it’s really quite interesting. Looking forward to future posts on this topic.

I have a psychology degree and have become very involved in the nutrition and natural health field as well. This entry is a great incorporation of both!
