The health supplement industry is big business.

Millions of dollars are spent by manufacturers on advertising and marketing. Luckily for them, billions of dollars are spent by consumers.

And when you subtract millions from billions, you end up with a lot of profit. And, there’s nothing wrong with that…as long as the customer is getting the results they paid for.

Q:  So, do consumers get what they pay for?

A:  In my experience, the short answer is NO.

Most supplements over-promise and under-deliver. But, not all….

These are the supplements and supplement companies that I think are worthy of your trust and your money.

General Health

Multi-Vitamins

I can’t say enough good things about New Chapter.

  • Most multivitamins and nutritional supplements are synthetic, chemically isolated nutrients that lack the natural beneficial compounds of a whole-food complex.

For the past few years, a number of progressive nutrition geeks have been singing the praises of Vitamin D.

Probiotics

There are several reasons that people are interested in probiotics for health purposes.

Another part of the interest in probiotics stems from the fact there are cells in the digestive tract connected with the immune system. One theory is that if you alter the microorganisms in a person’s intestinal tract (as by introducing probiotic bacteria), you can affect the immune system’s defenses.

Meal Replacements

There is no substitute for real food.

However, sometimes “real food” just isn’t convenient.

So, when life gets a little too hectic, and you don’t have time to make a real meal, what do you do?

  • Starve?
  • McDonalds?

Monster MilkThis supplement is a true meal replacement.

Way back in October of 2008, I wrote about leucine and it’s ability to turn back age related muscle loss (buy a tub for grandpa).

According to the research:

  • Leucine stimulates new muscle growth
  • Leucine is the major amino acid responsible for the muscle producing capability of food
  • Adding leucine to a meal increases muscle growth by 50 to 70 percent
  • Leucine works best when taken with a mixed carb / protein meal. This is due to the insulin surge that comes from the carbohydrates in the meal, and the other essential amino acids that are present.
  • Leucine does not work as well with carb-only or protein-only meals
  • The change in leucine levels in the blood seems to be more important than the overall amount. Therefore, it is better to take a small serving of leucine with a meal (level of leucine increases), wait a few hours (let the leucine levels drop), and then take another serving with some food (levels increase again).
  • Leucine supplementation has also shown to be effective as a supplement for athletes interested in adding functional muscle mass.

So, the plan is to take a small scoop (5g) of leucine with each meal of the day. (up to a max of 20g)

This supplement has worked wonders for my hard-gainers.

Branch Chain Amino Acids

You can’t go wrong with BCAAs.

  • Add them to protein shakes when you’re trying to gain muscle
  • Drink them at night when you’re dieting to preserve muscle mass

  2. I have a question I took Creatine for about 6 months and gained 20+ lbs at least half that in muscle, but I am currently focusing on cutting down my exsisting body fat and leaning out. Considering what happened when I took Creatine I am wondering if I took it up again how would I combat that weight gain? Different diet? More cardio?

  3. Oh god, so many, my head is spinning. So as a 24 year old female, which ones should I take? The multi-vitamin, the fish oil, and the Surge workout fuel? Or some other combo?

  4. Brit, the most important are:

    1. The multi or the greens (you can alternate – start with the multi – when you finish the bottle, buy a tub of the green food)
    2. The fish oils (the anti-inflammatory action of this product makes them a must have)
    3. Vitamin D – especially in winter – plus, they are super cheap

    If you still have money left over – add the Surge

    After that, I would go with a protein powder / meal replacement, digestive enzymes, probiotics, zyflamend, garlic, leucine, creatine, adaptogens, lara bars & fat burners

    The fish oil will be full of pollutants. Ascenta tests each batch of fish oil to make sure none of the crap we have dumped in the ocean ends up in your fish oil

    Same goes for the multi – you get what you pay for. The New Chapter multi has higher quality ingredients + those ingredients are absorbed more efficiently due to their method of processing.

    The vitamin D (make sure you get the D3 form) could be bought at Wal-Mart.

  7. Bought the multi-vitamin and the fish oil, because I am a lemming. Got the capsules instead of the liquid, because I’m not sure how I feel about downing a spoonful of oil.

  8. I usually start people with the capsules as well – It’s a little more expensive, but if you are squeamish about a tbsp of oil, then the caps are your best choice

    The first time I took creatine, i had the exact same reaction…I blew up like the Michelin Man.

    When I switched to a higher quality creatine, I lost that bloated effect. But, just to be sure, I would recommend skipping the “loading phase” and just start with the maintenance 5 gram dosage. In fact, if you’re really concerned about the bloat, I would start with 5 g on resistance workout days (3x per week) and thats it – no creatine on the other 4 days in the week.

    The Allmax creatine that I use has worked really well for all of my clients

  10. Biotest is kind of like that really, really crazy ex-girlfriend. You can’t trust a thing she says, she’ll happily bash any other supplement com- i mean, girl you even look at, and you honestly want to have nothing to do with her. But she’s ridiculously good in the sack and you can’t help but give her a chance once in a while, and DAMN, does she perform.

    If Biotest didn’t do dumb thing like claim that their magical carbs are better than sugar and try to use a modified slow digesting protein like casein to make it digest so ridiculously fast it’s basically useless to you, then they’d be worth dating on the reg. Until then, change your locks.

    I do like their greens supp and Flameout, though they’re pricey. I haven’t tried Surge, I want to, but once again, college student budget. Those are their standout products, everything else, I don’t see how shelling out a premium is going to make the supplement better than another half the price.

  12. Yeah, and if you’ve seen the actual protocol that goes with it, the sheer volume of fluids/nutrients you’re consuming around training is ridiculous. And of course you can’t scale it back whatsoever otherwise it wont work apparently. Nevermind the fact that the recommended dose is the same regardless if you’re 150 lbs or 300.

    Hopefully they don’t discontinue Surge.

    They feel like they’re doing something, but my log books tell me that they don’t generate any noticeable performance or physique improvements

  15. Ok, that all sounds great. But from what I have heard, and this is all word of mouth is that creatine will make me stronger and bigger, but I want to keep my cut physic. The super Pump allows me to go 2 hours plus in the gym while still feeling ramped up after this…. just that alone has to be worth something, I take protein after. So i guess my question is, is creatine going to make me less “cut” it fills muscle with water correct? Does the surge give you the long crazy drive that super pump gives…also, just ordered jac3ed, supposed to be more natural. Also read things that its really just the super load up of caffeine that makes super pump what it is…you know about this, I mean who is right here!? who can you trust in this world of constant back and forth bs!!

    After 4 weeks:

    Reps to Failure on the bench press increased by 28% compared to 12% in the control group (strength – endurance)
    1.4 lbs lean muscle mass was gained compared to nothing for the control

    Looks pretty good – 4 weeks of training and lean muscle mas increases along with strength (strength-endurance)

    Let’s compare to creatine

    Strength – 20% increase compared to 12% (1,3 or 10 RM)
    strength-Endurance – 26% compared to 12%

    Performance wise, Super Pump compares favorably to creatine

    Re Super Pump ingredients – we have no idea on individual ingredient quantities as Gaspari lumps them all into their “proprietary blend”

    With that being said, (at first glance), I don’t take issue with any of the ingredients (except the sweeteners & fake colors)

    It may be worth a try

    Chazzz – Would you be willing to do an experiment comparing 4 weeks of Super Pump vs 4 weeks of creatine + leucine supplementation?

  17. yes I would love to…did you look at the caffeine levels in super pump 250 though? its called methylxanthines (caffeine), Ive already been on Super Pump 250 for about 3 months though, initially I lost 20-30 pounds and got down to 150ish now back up to 165 and am shredded. When I lost the weight though, I was going through some tough times and was working out excessively (fyi) Also just injured my shoulder and have been resting it a week, feeling a bit better but tried bench w/ light load and still a bit of pain..any ideas with that on quick fix, or rest amonut? I believe its possibly from decline w/ dumbbells and just over did it.

    But to answer you, Id love to do an experiment, just shoot me an email with details and what specifically Im supposed to do/take.

  19. Shoulder – acupuncture/Zyflamend combo to bring down the inflammation

    Re the Superpump experiment – take some initial measurements – bodyweight, bodyfat%, circumferences – chest, waist, legs, arm, 1RM & 10 RM and Max RM at a chosen weight for various exercises

    This is your baseline

    Then go for 4-8 weeks using 5g creatine/20 g leucine daily (creatine & 5g leucine with your workout drink)

    Take measurements again

    Then go another 4-8 weeks using the superpump (ditch the creatine/leucine combo)

    Take the measurements again

    I would love to see the results (with that being said, if you are getting the results you want from SuperPump, don’t stress over this real world lab experiment)

    Personally, I like to see a combo of scientific/real world results before I recommend a supplement. But, there are so many different ones on the market & most of the marketing seems like bullshit, it’s hard to know which ones work and which ones are scams. If superpump works for you, stick with it until it stops working

  22. I would have to check dosages against some comparable products, but at first glance, it seems an interesting blend of ingredients. My concern with some supplement mixes like this is that companies throw every conceivable supplement into the blend but the amounts are so small as to be irrelevant.

    Not a fan of the Calcium Caseinate or the Soy – the casein often leads to bloating & gas, while the soy concentrate is linked to hormonal issues (especially men) and I am not a big fan of the corn maltodextrin thanks to the fructose

  25. I’m so grateful for this list, thank you. I’m newer to supplements and am
    suspect of anything that doesn’t grow in the ground, so trusted reccommendations are a huge huge help.

    As for D3, I was given a 50,000 mg weekly prescription dose for 6 months due to low levels (I lived in a sun-less state). To maintain, I bought 5000 mg. a day. Is that sufficient?Also,I’m satisfied that I got a high quality fish oil, and the bottle suggests anywhere between 1-3 400 mg pills daily before meals. How do I decide?

    Finally, adoptogens do feel key, and I’m totally on board with rebuilding the adrenals, but I am concerned that by taking rhodiola, for example, I may throw out of balance already healthy horomone levels, or further eschew them in the wrong direction. Along these same lines, I have been told by some trainers to definitely take DHEA and others say definitely not. Any thoughts?

  26. Hi Nancy – re the D3 levels, it will take another blood test to determine if your supp dosage is adequate. In addition to your daily dosage, we also have to consider how well you absorb the D3. If your absorption stinks, you may need to increase the dose, but it could also go the other way and you can reduce the dose.

    Re fish oils, I recommend 1 tbsp as a maintenance dose – 1 tbsp = 3 tsp = 15 ml = 4500 mg

    Re adaptogens, your concern is valid – you may want to rotate different products and/or alternate taking adaptogens for 2 weeks with a 1-2 week break. During the break, you may want to consider an acupuncture session.

    Am I right in assuming that it’s your doctor who is prescribing D3? If so, keep your doc in the loop about your supplement regime with him/her.
